Ingredients
- Chana Dal (Split chickpea lentil) 1 cup (soaked for 1 hour
- Water 2.5 cups
- Salt 1/2 tsp
- Turmeric powder 3/4 tsp
- Oil 1/2 cup
- Onion 1 big, chopped
- Ginger paste 1 tsp
- Garlic paste 1 tsp
- Green chilies 2-3, sliced
- Cumin seeds 1/2 tsp
- Tomatoes 2 big, chopped
- Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
- Red chili powder 1/2 tsp (or to taste)
- Coriander powder 1.5 tsp
- Garam masala 1 tsp
- Salt to taste
- Fresh coriander, chopped
Preparation
- In a pressure cooker, add drained chana dal, water (2.5 cups), salt and turmeric powder.
- Pressure cook for 10 minutes and allow the pressure to release naturally before removing the lid.
- Take the chana dal out in a bowl.
- To the same pressure cooker, add oil and onions.
- Sauté until soft. Now add ginger and garlic paste and sauté until fragrant.
- Add green chilies and cumin seeds and sauté for 1 minute and add tomatoes.
- Mix and cook on low until tomatoes are a bit soft.
- Now add turmeric powder (yes! Again), red chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala and salt. Mix and allow to cook on low until the tomatoes are mushy.
- Add the chana dal along with water if needed.
- Cover and cook for 5 minutes until water is combined with the dal.
- Lastly, garnish with freshly chopped coriander and serve. Enjoy!
