Dawat Style Chicken Curry Recipe

Ingredients

Marination

  • Garlic paste 1 tsp
  • Ginger paste 1 tsp
  • Yoghurt 1/2 cup
  • Tomato puree1 tbsp
  • Salt 1 tsp
  • Red chilli powder 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin powder 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder 1/2 tsp
  • Chicken with bones, 1-1.3 kg

Other Ingredients

  • Oil as needed
  • Cinnamon stick 1
  • Green cardamom 1
  • Cloves 2
  • Black peppercorns 4
  • Cumin seeds 1 tsp
  • Onions 2 big, blended to a paste
  • Ginger paste 1 tbsp
  • Garlic paste 1 tbsp
  • Green chilies 4-5, slit
  • Tomato puree 1 tbsp
  • Cumin powder 1 tsp
  • Coriander powder 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  • Tomatoes 4-5, blended to a paste
  • Methi leaves (dried fenugreek) 1 tsp
  • Salt to taste

Preparation

  1. MARINATION: In a bowl add yogurt, ginger paste, garlic paste, tomato puree, salt, red chili powder, turmeric powder, cumin powder and coriander powder. Mix well.
  2. Add chicken pieces, mix and marinate overnight in refrigerator.
  3. GRAVY: Heat oil in a pot and add cinnamon stick, green cardamom, cloves, black peppercorns and cumin seeds. Sauté for a minute until aromatic.
  4. Add onion paste (keep the flame low at this stage to avoid the paste from splattering) and fry until just golden brown.
  5. Now add ginger paste, garlic paste tomato puree and slit green chilies. Stir fry for 2 minutes until aromatic.
  6. Add cumin powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and dried fenugreek. Stir fry for 1 minute.
  7. Add blended tomatoes. Mix, cover and cook until all the water has evaporated and the oil has separated from the gravy.
  8. Add marinated chicken and stir fry on high flame until all the chicken has turned white from outside.
  9. Add 2 glasses of water, cover and cook for 25-30 minutes or until the chicken is nice and tender and completely cooked through. Add more water if needed while cooking.
  10. Lastly, adjust the gravy consistency and salt if necessary. If you need to thin out the gravy a bit more then add water and boil the gravy for a minute.
  11. Sprinkle garam masala, chopped green chilies and freshly chopped coriander.
  12. Serve with roti or naan, Enjoy!
