Homemade Pita Bread Recipe
Ingredients
- All-purpose flour (maida) 500 grams + 2-3 tbsp extra if needed
- Luke warm water 1 cup
- Instant yeast 2.5 tsp
- Sugar 1 tbsp
- Oil 1 tbsp
- Salt 1 tsp
- Yogurt 1/2 cup at room temperature
- Egg 1, large size, at room temperature (or substitute the egg by adding 1/4 cup more yogurt)
Preparation
- Add luke warm water to a cup. To this, add active dry yeast, sugar and oil. Allow to rest until foamy (about 5 minutes).
- NOTE: Water should be luke warm (neem garam) – not too hot, not too cold.
- NOTE: If there is no foam after 5 minutes that means your yeast has either expired or not working.
- To a big bowl, add all purpose flour and salt. Mix
- Add the foamy yeast mixture to the flour and start mixing.
- Add yogurt and beaten egg to the mixture.
- NOTE: In order for the dough to rise properly, yogurt and egg should be at room temperature.
- Knead the dough for 7-10 minutes on your clean counter top until there are no lumps. If the dough is too sticky to handle, add 1-2 tbsp of flour. The final dough should be soft and a little bit sticky but not too much. If the dough is hard and not sticky at all, then the cooked pita bread will be hard so make sure you use measuring cups and measuring spoons for this recipe.
- Shape the dough into a ball and apply oil all over. Place in an oiled bowl, cover and allow to rest for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- After the dough has doubled, punch it down to deflate it. Cut into 16 equal portions.
- Shape each piece into a ball and allow to rest for 5-7 minutes (resting helps the gluten relax and makes working with the dough easier)
- Now roll the ball using a rolling pin until the desired thickness is achieved. I rolled to a roti like thickness.
- Heat tawa or a pan on high heat and place the pita bread on it. After 15-20 seconds change the side. If kept for longer on one side, the bread will develop bubbles which we do not want in a pita bread.
- Keep changing sides a few times until the bread is ready.
- As soon as you take the pita bread off the heat, wrap it in a kitchen towel or a foil to keep it soft.
- Enjoy with your favorite main dish!
