Spinach Tomato Dal (Lentil)
Ingredients
- Split Yellow Lentil (Mung Dal) 1/2 cup
- Split Orange Lentil (masoor Dal) 1/2 cup
- Clarified Butter (Desi Ghee) 2-3 tbsp
- Onion 1 big, sliced
- Ginger paste 1 tsp
- Garlic paste 1 tsp
- Green chilies 2
- Tomatoes 3 big, cut in big chunks
- Red chili powder 3/4 tsp or to taste
- Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
- Chicken cubes 2
- Salt to taste (chicken cubes also contain salt so add accordingly)
- Spinach 2 cups, washed and drained.
- Garam Masala 3/4 tsp
- Cumin powder 1/2 tsp
- Coriander powder 1 tsp
Preparation
- Wash and soak the lentils in water.
- Meanwhile, heat Clarified Butter (Desi Ghee) in a pot and add sliced onions. Once translucent add ginger and garlic paste and green chilies. Cook until the raw smell goes off.
- Now add chopped tomatoes, cover and cook until tomatoes are cooked.
- Now add chicken cubes, red chili powder, turmeric powder and salt (if needed).
- Cook for 1 minute until aromatic.
- Add lentils and 3-4 cups of water.
- Cover and allow to cook on low heat until the lentils are all cooked.
- Now add spinach and cook for another 5-8 minutes until the spinach is blanched in the dal.
- Lastly, add garam masala, coriander powder and cumin powder. Mix and turn of the flame and cover for 1 minute.
- Serve hot with rice or roti. Enjoy!
